Plan your journey to Tampere and discover the easiest ways to explore the city and its beautiful surroundings.
Tampere is located in southern Finland, approximately 180 kilometres north of Helsinki.
As one of Finland’s major cities, Tampere is relatively easy to reach by train, bus, car or plane.
Once you arrive, you will find that the compact city centre and efficient public transportation make exploring Tampere straightforward.
Flying to Tampere
Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is located approximately 17 kilometres southwest of the city centre.
The airport offers a limited selection of flight connections, so international visitors may find it more convenient to fly to Helsinki Airport.
From Helsinki Airport, you can travel to Tampere by train, usually with a connection at Tikkurila.
The journey generally takes around one and a half to two hours, depending on the connection.
Travelling by Train
Travelling by train is one of the most convenient ways to reach Tampere.
Finnish railway operator VR provides regular services between Helsinki and Tampere, with typical journey times of approximately one and a half to two hours.
Tampere also has rail connections to several other Finnish destinations, making it a convenient stop during a longer journey through Finland.
The railway station is centrally located, within walking distance of many hotels and attractions.
Getting Around Tampere
Tampere has an efficient public transportation system operated under the Nysse brand.
The city’s modern tram network connects the centre with several residential areas and popular destinations.
Local buses provide additional connections throughout Tampere and surrounding communities.
You can find route information, timetables and ticket options through Nysse’s official services.
Exploring on Foot or by Bicycle
Tampere’s city centre is pleasant to explore on foot.
Many attractions, restaurants and shops are located within a relatively compact area.
During the warmer months, cycling is another enjoyable way to discover the city and its beautiful lakeside surroundings.
Do You Need a Car?
If you are mainly visiting central Tampere, you probably will not need a rental car.
However, a car can be useful if you want to explore smaller towns, rural attractions or more remote natural areas outside the city.
For a first visit, I recommend spending at least two or three days in Tampere. This gives you enough time to enjoy the museums, experience a traditional Finnish sauna and explore the city’s beautiful lakeside scenery.
