Pyynikki Observation Tower manages to combine two excellent reasons to make a detour from central Tampere: a panoramic view and a doughnut. The tower stands on the Pyynikki ridge, surrounded by forest between lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi.
It is one of my favourite kinds of attraction – simple, inexpensive in spirit and closely connected to the landscape of the city.
Climb above the trees
The tower itself is not enormous compared with modern observation towers, but its position on the high ridge gives it an impressive advantage. From the top you can look across Tampere, surrounding forests and the lakes that define the region.
On a clear day, the view helps explain why Tampere feels so closely connected with water and nature despite being one of Finland’s largest cities.
Do not skip the café
Pyynikki is almost as famous for its café as for the view. The freshly made doughnuts, known locally as munkki, have become a Tampere tradition.
Have one with coffee after visiting the tower. This is not the moment to pretend you only came for the scenery.
Walk the ridge
Allow extra time to explore the surrounding Pyynikki area. Forest paths make it easy to turn a tower visit into a longer walk, and nearby Pispala can also be combined with the excursion.
Check current opening information before travelling, particularly outside the main visitor season.
If you only have time for a handful of places in Tampere, I would include Pyynikki. You get forest, lakes, a city panorama and one of Tampere’s best-known local treats in a single stop.
