Tampere City Centre – What to See and Do

Tampere’s city centre is compact, lively and easy to explore on foot. It sits on the narrow strip of land between lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, with the Tammerkoski rapids running through the heart of the city. For a first-time visitor, the centre is the natural place to begin.

Start around Tammerkoski

The red-brick factory buildings beside the rapids tell much of Tampere’s story. Former industrial areas such as Finlayson have been transformed into places for culture, restaurants, cinemas and shops while retaining their historic character. Walk along the water and cross the bridges for some of the most recognisable views in Tampere.

Markets, shopping and culture

Keskustori, the Central Square, is surrounded by important buildings and is a useful landmark when finding your way around. Nearby streets offer department stores, independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Tampere Market Hall is another worthwhile stop, especially if you want to sample Finnish food or take a coffee break.

Several museums and cultural attractions are within easy walking distance. You can combine sightseeing with a visit to a gallery, theatre or museum without spending much time on transport.

An easy city to walk

One of central Tampere’s strengths is that distances are short. The railway station, Tammerkoski, Finlayson and many restaurants are all close together. The tram makes longer journeys simple, but for a day in the centre you may hardly need public transport at all. Allow time to wander: Tampere often feels most appealing when you leave the main shopping streets and follow the water, old factory walls and quieter side streets.
